THE ART OF MAKING NATURAL PERFUME

Posted by Eleanor Ozich on

Each time I roll essential oil perfume onto my wrists, I am instantly enveloped in a feeling of pure love. It’s one that evokes divine comfort and joy, and I love that I am able to create my own custom scent depending on my mood or how I want to feel.

Essential oils are deeply intuitive and different for all of us, which is why I encourage you to get playful and creative when it comes to making a blend that is uniquely perfect for you. To make things easier, however, I have shared some of my favourite blends below, along with some tips and ideas for concocting your own hand-blended perfume.

An important thing to note is that essential oils are gentler than most regular perfumes, and so you will need to apply more often. I like to carry a few perfume rollers with me in my handbag at all times, and will often roll on to my pulse points throughout the day whenever I simply need a moment for me.

Where to start?

If you are new to essential oils, I recommend choosing only three oils to begin with, as this will keep your perfume from getting too complicated. For me, I like to begin with something spicy/earthy such as Frankincense, Cedarwood, Vetiver or Sandalwood. Next I’ll add a floral such as Lavender, Chamomile, Jasmine or Geranium to help lift and add a note of femininity. Lastly, I’ll combine with a citrus or something herbaceous to balance it all out. Some of my favourites include Lime, Wild Orange, Tangerine, Bergamot and Juniper Berry. You certainly don’t have to stick to this method, but it seems to help get the creativity flowing.

Before deciding on your unique blend, uncap each essential oil, hold the bottles together in you hands and waft them under your nose to get a sense of how they blend together. You might like to do this a few time with different variations until you feel happy with your combination.

Here's some of my favourites:

Earth goodness – 3 drops Grapefruit, 2 drops Ginger, 3 drops Vetiver, 2 drops Patchouli

Unwind – 3 drops Roman Chamomile, 4 drops Lavender Peace, 2 drops Wild Orange

Sensual –  3 drops Bergamot, 2 drops Cinnamon, 3 drops Ylang Ylang, 2 drops Hawaiian Sandalwood

Pure luxury – 3 drops Bergamot,  3 drops Frankincense, 3 drops Jasmine

Flirty floral: 4 drops Geranium, 4 drops Lime, 2 drops Lavender, 2 drops Cedarwood

Hopeless romantic: 4 drops Lavender, 3 drops Frankcincense,  3 drops Ylang Ylang

De-stress: 4 drops Copaiba, 3 drops lime, 4 drops Hawaiian Sandalwood.

Invigorate – 3 drops Wild Orange, 2 drops Tangerine, 3 drops Juniper Berry

What you’ll need:

- 10ml glass roller bottle
- Essential oils (find out more below)
- Fractionated coconut oil or other carrier oil of your choice

Method:

Once you’ve decided on the blend you’d like to make, carefully add 10-15 drops of essential oils into your roller bottle.

Fill to the top with the carrier oil of your choice, pop the lid on, and carefully swirl around a few times to disperse.

To use, apply to the soles of feet, along spine, wrists, temples, and back of the neck.

Important note: essential oils are highly concentrated and so a little goes a long way. When you apply them to the skin, they are absorbed into the bloodstream, and through inhalation, they go directly to the brain. Purity is paramount when it comes to essential oils as unfortunately, not all oils are created equal. Many contain fillers and artificial fragrances which I would never dream of putting on my skin, so please be careful where you source them from. Click here to read about why I choose doTERRA, and why I find them to be the safest for my family.
