NATURALLY SCENTED PLAY DOUGH

Posted by Eleanor Ozich on

Play dough is one of those things that many people buy in stores, however, most don’t realise how easy it is to whip up at home. In this recipe, I’ve coloured the dough using natural dyes made from fruit and vegetables, each colour is also scented with a few drops of essential oil, such as lemon, lavender and eucalyptus.  As their little hands shape, roll and mould their own creations, the oil diffuses in to the air, making the most beautiful, sensory experience.

Here's a few natural dyes I've been playing around with:

Light pink - Place one cup raspberries and one cup water in a pan. Bring to the boil, then simmer gently, for about twenty minutes, or until reduced by about half.  Allow to cool, then strain.

Purple - Place one cup blueberries and one cup water in a pan. Bring to the boil, then simmer gently, for about twenty minutes, or until reduced by about half.  Allow to cool, then strain.

Dark pink - In a saucepan, place roughly chopped petals of about 6 red roses, along with one cup water. Bring to the boil, then simmer gently, for about twenty minutes, or until reduced by about half. Allow to cool, then strain.

Light pink – grate a medium sized beetroot, and place in a saucepan along with one cup of water. Bring to the boil, then simmer gently, for about twenty minutes. Allow to cool, then strain.

Yellow – Whisk 1 teaspoon of dried turmeric in to 1/2 a cup of hot water. Allow to cool

Brown - Whisk 1 teaspoon cocoa in to ½ a cup of hot water. Allow to cool.

To make the playdough:

1/2 cup salt
1 ½ cups flour
1 tbsp cream of tartar
1 tbsp olive oil

1/2 cup naturally coloured water, see above for variations.

Due to the natural fruit and vegetable components in this recipe, the dough will only keep for 2-3 weeks. Some colours keep better than others. If you would like it to keep for longer, simply use plain water instead of coloured.

Combine all dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Add the oil, and then gradually drizzle in the coloured water, whilst mixing with a fork, until you get a dough like consistency. Add a few drops of essential oil if using, knead gently for a few minutes, and you’re good to go.

Store the play dough in an air tight container, and keep somewhere cool.

If drying starts to occur, add a few drops of water and knead until smooth.
