I've had many readers reach out to say that they would love to know more about essential oils, but are unsure of where to start. And so I've put together a guide to 10 everyday doTERRA oils that are extremely versatile, will naturally simplify your medicine, bathroom and kitchen cleaning cupboards, whilst also bringing a lovely sense of joy in to your home.
First of all, I want to mention that if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have any health conditions, please consult your doctor before using essential oils. Most are safe to use, but I urge you to check beforehand. The Modern Essentials App is also very useful, as you can search up any one oil, and check safety warnings.
I also recommend diluting the oils with fractionated coconut oil or carrier oil of your choice before applying topically. These incredibly powerful, and highly concentrated oils are 50-80 times more powerful than the plant in it’s natural form, and so less, is always more. If in doubt, please follow bottle guidelines, or seek professional help.
Frankincense is otherwise known as the ‘king of oils’ and for very good reason, too.
This 'liquid gold' has been used for centuries for medicinal purposes to ease symptoms of anxiety, depression, arthritis and stomach ulcers, to name a few. I've also experienced two head injuries in the past 24 months, and I've found it to help me to feel myself again.
Frankincense naturally promotes feelings of calm and peace when used aromatically in a diffuser, or you could pop a few drops in to a roller blend diluted with fractionated coconut oil, and apply to your pressure points when needed. It's also known to reduce the appearance of skin imperfections, and help with anti-aging, which is why I love to include it my evening skincare ritual.
If I'm feeling stressed or overwhelmed, I'll often rub some in to my palms, cup my hands over my nose and mouth, and do a few deep inhalations, it's a simple, yet effective way to balance my mood and promote feelings of deep relaxation.
I have also grown to love it's unique smell, and would describe it's aroma as warm, spicy, and slightly sweet. Lovely paired with many different oils.
Lavender is probably my most-used oil, which initially surprised me as I had previously been put off it's smell in the past due to experiencing artificially fragranced lavender products.
It's fabulous to keep on hand at all times due to it's plethora of uses, the most common being it's relaxing properties to promote a peaceful sleep. I also find it helps to ease feelings of tension, stress or overwhelm.
Most evenings, I'll diffuse it along with lemon or wild orange and cedar wood as a signal for my kids to slow down, relax and unwind. I'll also add a few drops to their bath time ritual, or make a diluted spray to spritz on bed linen. To make, simply add a splash of witch hazel and 10 drops or so of lavender to a small amber spray bottle, then top with filtered water. This also doubles as a delicious smelling linen spray for the ironing.
Lavender essential oil is also great for the skin and can help to heal burns, scars and stretch marks. I also find it helps to reduce itchiness from insect bites, and gently heals eczema - I say this from personal experience with my two older children.
I'm sure I don't need to describe the fresh, invigorating aroma of peppermint as it's one most of us love and know well.
This wonderful oil can be diffused, applied topically and be used sparingly to flavour food (such as chocolate peppermint truffles or homemade chocolate).
The high menthol content of the doTERRA Peppermint oil sets it apart from the rest when it comes to to purity and quality, making it one of the best-selling oils in their range. It is super potent, so please be careful when using around young children, and dilute well.
I'll often use peppermint oil relieve headaches and tension in the neck, by massaging a drop or two on to my pressure points - the temples, behind the ears and base of the neck.
I've also found it helps to soothe fevers, nausea and upset tummies. Place a cup of hot water in to a bowl, add 1-2 drops of peppermint oil, then dampen a cloth in the solution. Apply to the forehead, base of the neck, or on the stomach area for gentle relief.
A wonderful pick me up, too. Combine a few drops of peppermint essential oil and lemon oil in your palms, rub together, then take a few deep inhalations to wake up your senses and uplift your mood. You might also notice a cooling effect on the skin, and so you can imagine it helps to 'cool' your mood if feeling angry or frustrated.
The invigorating and purifying properties of lemon essential oil make it the most top-selling oil that doTERRA offers, and I'm not surprised as I seem to go through this one faster than anything else.
Each 15ml bottle contains the carefully pressed rind of 50 organic Sicilian lemons, and so you can imagine how gorgeously aromatic this particular oil smells.
Lemon blends well with almost any other oil, and can be diffused to cleanse and purify the air in your home, whilst supporting healthy respiratory function. Or if you're like me, you might have fun creating own lemony spray and wipe for extra sparkly surfaces.
Lemon essential oil also has a magical way of lifting my mood and helping me to feel motivated, which is why I love to make my very own 'uplifting' roller blend. Combined with grapefruit, sweet orange and lime, this citrusy combo smells just like summertime.
It's great for furniture, too. Use a cloth soaked in water and a few drops of lemon oil to clean and protect leather surfaces or garments, or rub on to sticker residue to remove. You'll be happy to know that you can use lemon oil to help remove stubborn stains. Apply the lemon oil to cover the stain completely, and then immediately pop the item in the washing machine and wash. It works on older stains too, the trick is to apply right before you throw it in the washing machine.
DigestZen is known as the “tummy tamer” blend due to its ability to aid in digestion, soothe occasional stomach upset, and maintain overall digestive health.
This lovely blend contains fennel, ginger, anise and peppermint among other oils, and is a healthy, natural, and gentle way to soothe an upset stomach or maintain a healthy digestive system.
My daughter often asks to use this oil as she has a sensitive stomach, and it works wonders for her. It's also great for any kind of motion sickness. Simply massage on to the stomach or pressure points before flying, driving or going out to sea as a calming preventive.
On Guard - this extra powerful blend is my go-to essential oil for keeping our home healthy and immune systems strong.
Expertly designed, On Guard protects against environmental and seasonal threats, and if you're a mama like me, you'll do anything to keep bugs coming home from school or daycare.
During the colder months, I'll diffuse On Guard to help purify the air (whilst also making it smell like spiced deliciousness) and add to my spray + wipe and hand cleanser for extra protection. And if I feel a cold or flu is coming on, I'll dilute with some fractionated coconut oil and massage on to the chest or back to help relieve symptoms.
Lastly, I want to mention that the fastest, and most efficient way to absorb the oil, is by applying it to the souls of the feet, as this is where each nerve line ends. According to the ancient practice of reflexology, certain areas of the feet correspond to the body’s organs, and so by applying essential oils to your feet, the oils may have a stronger, more beneficial effect on certain areas of the body.
Tea Tree is best known for it's cleansing qualities, this wonderful oil is fantastic for purifying the air, promoting healthy immune systems, and is also known to help skin conditions, such as eczema, dandruff, acne and sunburn.
Use topically by diluting with fractionated coconut oil, and applying to the specific area. I also find tea-tree to be super anti-fungal, making it fantastic at killing mould, and as a preventative for future growth. See my mould spray recipe here which can be used on walls, in wardrobes and in the shower or bath.
Easy Air is a harmonious blend of essential oils that help to maintain feelings of clear and easy breathing, whilst minimising the effects of seasonal bugs and viruses that might be floating around.
Easy Air can be applied topically to the chest, back or bottom of the feet, or diffused at bedtime to calm the senses and promote a relaxing, restful sleep. It's basically a completely natural alternative to vicks vapour rub, and does the job brilliantly.
Ice Blue is an aromatic blend that brings me back to childhood memories of my Grandma and her tiger balm.
It's a fragrant blend that soothes and cools aches and pains, making it wonderful for massage and sports injuries. Once rubbed in to the skin, the therapeutic benefits of Ice Blue are often felt in a short period of time, with a neat sensation of both hot and cold on the skin as it works it's magic.
And last but not least, Oregano is one of the most powerful and potent essential oils, and has been used traditionally for centuries due to it's cleansing and immune-boosting properties.
Caution should always be taken when inhaling or diffusing this oil due to its potency, and only one or two drops is needed.Additionally, Oregano should ALWAYS be diluted with fractionated coconut oil if applied to the skin.
I personally only use it to the feet as the skin isn't so sensitive in that area, and it also enters the body quicker. Oregano oil is fantastic support for our respiratory system, particularly during the colder months. Diffuse 1-2 drops along with 2-3 drops of Easy Air at night, also nice paired with peppermint or eucalyptus oil.
